Hoff Magazine Blog - February 2025

February 3rd, 2025.

One year ago today, I very nearly decided to call it quits (if you know what I mean). Now, I've launched a magazine. I'd call that some pretty good progress!

It's only a small magazine, and there's not much in the way of editorial, so it's more like a visual directory for now, but it's a decent start and I'm very proud of what I've made throughout January.

This was going to have a monthly release initially, when I first hatched the idea and was full of beans about how much I was going to be able to do. A few weeks of me actually doing it all, putting in the work on the website, design, setting up my new laptop, contacting businesses online and in person, writing, and then checking it all through for approval and more went by, and I regretted this.

After those few non-stop weeks, including my job which is even more design, and not a lot of time for myself, I quickly decided I would be better off changing this to a bi-monthly release working on a schedule of:

  • February

  • April

  • June

  • August

  • October

  • December

This allows me to maintain a good life-balance, gives me plenty of time to get things done and approved for the mags, means I can work on other aspects of the website such as photography or film reviews, and it may end up making the magazine bigger than the current 18 pages as I'll have more time to get in touch with people.

I think this was definitely the right call and I'm excited to see what kind of results I can get going forward.

I'm just going to keep this first post quite brief because my laptop is about to die and I don't have much else to say, but I'd like to end by thanking all those who have chosen to be involved in this early stage of the project, any and all support means the world.

An extra special thanks goes to Tony Pick for encouraging me to go through with this when I pitched it to him over a coffee, he's a great photography mentor to have and one of the nicest and most talented folks in our area.

Cheers Tony!
